Kalamazoo is facing a vote on a local non-discrimination ordinance November 3, 2009. Voting “yes” adds gay and transgender people into protections for housing and the work place that already exists based on characteristics like race, age, and marital status, among other things. As a resident of Kalamazoo county, I was shocked to learn that this ordinance was in jeopardy of being repealed and feared that my gay, lesbian, and transgender friends could lose their jobs or be denied housing solely because of their sexual preference. This sort of discrimination against my friends who are some of the most active, compassionate, and upstanding citizens in our community compelled me to write this song. John and I developed the song together, because as artists it is our responsibility to promote our core values, including equality and fairness, through our music. On Saturday, September 26th 11 Kalamazoo musicians came together at The Strutt and donated their time, energy, and talent to the, performing “One Kalamazoo” for a live video recording and studio audio recording. On Sunday, October 25th from 2-7pm these musicians, as well as many others, will again donate their time and talent to perform at The One Kalamazoo Fest concert, designed to raise awareness about the ordinance and to raise funds for the One Kalamazoo campaign (a grassroots organization dedicated to raising awareness about the need to Vote YES on November 3rd for the Kalamazoo Non-Discrimination Ordinance.
